Well apart of all the bells and whistles of Osclass b5, all i see is a huge ammount of plugins that do not work. So there is a huge ammount of incompatibility (expected at some point).
And since all devs of plugins and themes are lost in space (MIA), there is NO WAY we can update from Osclass 3.9.
Compatibility is an issue, especially now that almost no one develops anything on Osclass. But considering the fact that Osclass 3.8 was SO OLD in everything, things had to change.
Not sure how Osclass 5 will do, now that there are so many different versions, from totally different developers. Probably Osclass 5 (when released) will be much much better, but with no plugins/themes and compatibility will not go far.
And that is IF anybody is still using Osclass as their script of choice.
Sure, you are right. Osclass 3.8 was a legacy script. Everything was very old, nothing "modern" in it.
But with Osclass 5 and most free plugins and themes not working, who is gonna update?
And who cares about the code, if it works mostly right (like 3.9) ?
Also i do not see anything really NEW added to Osclass 5.
And considering the fact that this is also true for Osclass 3.9 and Osclass 3.8 (and probably also earlier versions), i'm not surprised that this script is not popular any more.
While fixes and modernization are good, there are so many things missing ....
Look what the developer of 3.9 posted at Github:
Current 3.x.x ( Including original osclass builds and the variant of them) are vulnerable to XSS and SQL injection attacks( Not published yet but will be soon) and take time to fix and are already fixed in dev branch, which will withdraw our focus from 4.x branch.
So 3.9 contains XSS & SQL security holes and for a year they have not been fixed. This is what i read from the above.
Wordpress gets security updates, even for version 3.7 (and now we are on 5.5). Do you know how old 3.7 is? 3.7 was out in 2013.
And we must update to Osclass 5 to have all those fixed? What a bad decision that is. There should have been a 3.9.1 or something, with all SECURITY issues patched.
Personally i prefer to stay with 3.9 and have Ninja firewall PRO in-front.
