I'm trying to figure out how to update to 3.9 from a pre 3.8 version.

What is your current version of Osclass that you want to upgrade?

My version is 3.7.4
Ok, you can't auto update anything right now. So manually via ftp is the way. I hope you are familiar with that, if not feel free to ask here.
BACKUP your Osclass folder AND your DATABASE and be sure your backup is ok.
Put your site to Maintenance Mode first.
Download Osclass 3.8x from this forum and upload it via ftp to your site.
Login to your admin and check.
If everything is ok then download Osclass 3.9 from this forum and upload it via ftp.
Login again and check if all is ok.
Disable Maintenance and check if everything is ok.
(i have no idea if you can directly go from 3.7 to 3.9. Maybe you can, still better do what i wrote to be safe)

While i'm familiar with ftp and all that, any ideas how i can backup the database? Within Osclass import/export?
No, not within Osclass.
Backup the database from your hosting control panel (Cpanel or other).
